Prostate Cancer UK Golf Day-Friday 17th May 2019 at Aldeburgh Golf Club.

Piers Pollard organised his annual golf day at Aldeburgh Golf Club on Friday 17th May, this year to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

40 players participated on an overcast but dry day and this was followed by a lunch, auction and raffle. Charlie Packshaw, who is Chairman of PCUK and lives in Hoo, gave an excellent insight into prostate cancer and the charity.

Thanks to the very kind generosity of both sponsors and auction lot donations and bidders, the day raised £7,500 for PCUK, with over £6,000 coming from the auction, conducted by Piers Pollard.

Team Alchemy, led by David Rowledge of Alchemy wines ( who very generously sponsored the wine ) were the winners, with Rupert Precious’s team, The Tonker Rooneys coming a very close second on count back.

Our dessert Wine…Mu:

Geography – in the South of France, just in land but overlooking the Mediterranean, is the Village of Rivesaltes – and, with the mountains in the heart of the Eastern Pyrenees climbing up and away from the coast, here is where we find the grapes grown for Mu: Only Muscat de Alexandria and Muscat de Petit Grain can be used for the Protected Designation of Origin, Muscat de Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturel.

Soil – alluvial clay and limestone with major galleys (big round boulders) dotted around the vineyards. These galleys capture the sun during the day and gradually radiate the heat during the cool nights. Good sea breezes reduce moisture in the vineyard which eliminates any rot in the late-harvested grapes.

Vinification – the majority of the vines are hand harvested, picked at maximum maturity and finely pressed to obtain the “nectar”. Once decanted naturally, the juice if fermented using modern temperature controlled tanks (between 14-16 degrees C). Fortification is achieved exclusively with wine alcohol to stop the fermentation and to preserve the residual sugar (at no less that 100 grms/litre – and the total alcohol has to be equal or superior to 15% – Mu: is 15.%) .

Drink chilled with summer desserts and fresh fruits, or on its own on warm summer evenings.
